Why humanities studies is critical for the students?

In the note for cabinet which was submitted for approval for setting up All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) the need for having the courses on humanities even in technical and professional courses curriculum was emphasized.

I am quoting from the summary note for cabinet dated 12th January, 1955 which says under para 3 as under:-

" The Ministry of Health considers that any institution on which the status, functions and powers of a University are conferred should deal not  only with any specific technical branch of education but also with humanities.

In other words, no one who passes out from a university should be merely a technician. He should have had, in addition to special knowledge and skill in some particular subject or subjects, something of that humanizing influence which equips him with a broad outlook on life, and a sense of responsibility to the community and the capacity to enjoy life to the full.

The inclusion of humanities as a part of programme of study in the institute is intended to serve this purpose. It is proposed that the curriculum of the institute should include the compulsory teaching of humanities for all students in addition to their medical subjects. "
