Independence Day Thoughts

"Peace has been said to be indivisible; so is freedom, so is prosperity now, and so also is disaster in this one world that can no longer be split into isolated fragments."

-Jawahar Lal Nehru in his speech on the midnight of 14th August 1947

Now one can imagine what our first PM wanted to convey with these words, when there is peace in pockets and turmoil all over , when there is freedom for some and others are kept captive without having any rights, when properity is in the hands of chosen few, and the concern for a disaster in one part of the country never bothers us, then we have failed to achieve what we wanted. Some day we will.

I remember the famous lines of another visionary poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz who wrote these lines on the Independence

"ye daag daag ujaalaa, ye shab-gazidaa sahar
wo intazaar tha jis kaa, ye wo sahar to nahin

abhi garaani-e-shab me kami nahin aai
najaat-e-dida-o-dil ki ghadi nahin aai
chale chalo ki wo manzil abhi nahin aai"

In the past 68 years we have achieved a lot as a nation, with adult franchise, political freedom, economic growth and social upliftment but at the same time the ideals have now deterioted.

The fundamental duties (some of them) as a citizen of this country are:-

1. To abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem;
2. To cherish and follow the noble ideals which inspired our national struggle for freedom;
3. To uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India;
4. To defend the country and render national service when called upon to do so;
5. To promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities; to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women;
6. To value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite culture;

In the last 68 years, what we have achieved is that Secular has become SICKULAR. We don't give a damn to composite culture, dignity of women is compromised on daily basis, language is cause of fight among people, regionalism is on the rise, national service means how to make more money out of wreched people, noble ideas which inspired national struggle for freedom are hardly known to any and we won't even bother to read them, respect for constitutional institutions is on the verge of decline, and Who reads Constitution if it will not be asked in the Civil Services Exam.

At least on this day there should be a pledge by each one of us to make this country a better country. No matter how small our contribution is, but it will be counted.

As Dr. Ambedkar said that "Social and Economic Freedom is more important than political freedom and it should be given more importance and without socio-economic freedom the political freedom is of little use".

We must all strive for achieving that.
